In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor.
