How to Replace an audi car key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor programming is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or Audi Replacement Key Cost uk G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Mercedes-Benz-3D-Star.pngYesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues with your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your replacement Audi Key fob because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. When this sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This part is common across the audi car key replacement 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
